Thirteen persons were arrested by Big Island police for offenses committed on illegal gambling at the rooms in Hilo and Kailua-Kona. This was prompted by 6 months of investigation caused by citizen complaints. The officers of Area II Vice Section, in coordination with the Area II Criminal Intelligence Unit, identified the owner of Kona establishment – Sergio Cabal, 44 years old. He was with his lone 54-yearl old employee named Aaron Hiraishi.

It was on the 2nd of March that the police officers served a search warrant in Unit 105, 74-5589 Alapa Street. The officers seized 17 illegal gambling machines with gambling documents and a cash amounting to $18,207. The owner and the employee were present with their 10 clients who were busy playing on the illegal machines. Both Cabal and Hiraishi were arrested because of charges of promoting gambling and possession of gambling devices and records

Also, there were individuals who were arrested on charges of gambling. These are Annie Abraham, 33 years old; Fred Alokoa, 33 years old; Yun Choo, 41 years old; Tilda Alokoa, 43 years old, Gaius Ittu, 61 years old; Marie Pai, 26 years old; Renell Kaupu-Kaialiilii, 51 years old, Shrue Tosie, 33 years old and Timothy Sigrah, 35 years old.
The 12 people who were arrested stayed overnight at the Kona police cellblock. They were then released on Saturday pending the necessary investigation.
Similarly, another warrant was served to another gambling establishment located in Hilo. Cabal’s wife, Ruth Cabal, was found in the site. He was also charged of promoting gambling and possessing gambling records and devices.
In the morning of Monday, Sergio Cabal was again arrested because of suspicion on promoting gambling. He was then freed pending further investigation.
The police asks for the participation of the community by reporting illegal activities. The people are advised to close entry points in their homes. With regard to illegal gambling activities, residents can call the Police Department through their emergency line at 935-3311. For those who do not want to reveal their identities, they can call the Crime Stoppers line at 961-8300 or 329-8181. They can also be eligible for a reward in the amount of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is an organization of volunteer ordinary citizens. The organization does not record the calls that they receive or subscribe to caller identification system. All the information gathered at Crime Stoppers are considered with utmost confidentiality.
