Internet Gambling: Seen as Profitable

An Eastern Connecticut State University professor has stated that Internet gambling will contribute to the rising addiction concerns, especially of the younger generation. However, he mentioned that profits will also considerably increase in this venture in the cyberspace. This statement was relayed to the attendees of an event in Norwich dubbed as the National Problem Gambling Awareness Week which was held at the United Community and Family Services. Professor Thomas Broffman stated that the issue on Internet gambling is expected to become a “very hot topic” in the coming months and years.
Insofar as Connecticut is concerned, Broffman said that the topic is still up in the air but it will surely be here in the future. This is something that people should be prepared for and be aware of. Aside from his involvement in the university Prof. Broffman also serves as the president of Broffman Training and Consultation Services, a company based in Rhode Island.
Meanwhile, representatives from the Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun informed the authorities that the security procedures that they implement cut the incidence of illegal gambling. This will definitely help in improving tax revenues. Knowing this promotion, Broffman mentioned that this is an attractive effort for encouraging good sales. The professor said that, “They’ve already got a huge edge.”
From being considered as a vice, Broffman observes that gambling has evolved to be now seen as another way of entertainment. He sees this happening not just in the southeastern Connecticut but in the whole world. He said that this is definitely a global issue that wherever you look in the US, gambling is present. At this time, it is not leaving.
Broffman has not expressed whether he is against or in favor of gambling. He sees that gambling creates a breed of untruthful people. This is because he is just amazed with how gamblers lie to one another and even to themselves. He further mentioned the roots of gambling in the American culture. Its roots date from as early as the year 1600s and started when legal lotteries were used to raise money to cover colonial expenditures.
According to a social services worker of Norwich Reliance House, Nicholas Zito, “the glamour of gambling is increasing, especially among the young.” Because of his experience in the social services area, he is exposed to homeless people who have lost all their money because of gambling. It may not always be the case but this situation happens, according to Zito.
Professor Broffman was introduced to deliver the lunch speech by Fred Fetta, a coordination of Better Choice Gambling Addiction Program at the same university. UCFS has just started an internship program with five students aimed at rooting out gambling concerns of college students. This treatment program has used a turtle as their mascot to express their statement that “recovery is always slow and steady.”
