There are many variants of stud poker.  The basic variant is the 5-card stud poker game, but the 7-card stud game is the most played form of stud poker.

How Are Stud And Draw Games Different?

In draw poker games, all the cards are face down.  In the stud poker game, part of the cards is face up and some of them are face down.  For a strategy savvy player, the stud cards are easy to play because the open cards provide the players with an easy clue about the proceeds of the hands around – easing decision making.

Special Terminology – The Street Cards in Stud

The third card is the third street card, the fourth as the fourth street card and so on for the number of cards in pockets. Each betting session follows the street cards and are known as the third street betting, Fourth Street betting and so on. The betting cycle consists of the call, raise and re-raise and flow to next street card deal.

• The game begins with the ante by all players
• Each player in the game receives one face up and one face down card in the first round
• A betting round is completed
• Then the third street card is dealt face up
• The third street betting is completed
• The fourth street card is dealt face up
• The fourth street betting is completed
• The fifth street card is dealt face up
• The fifth street betting is completed
• The show down occurs and the best high rank hand wins.

In the 7-card stud game, Sixth Street and Seventh Street betting rounds occur before the show down.  The 7-card stud game is easier and therefore popular than 5-card stud because it is easy to make a better 5-card hand with seven cards than with just 5-cards.
